Within the domain of metadata research, considerable work has been devoted to converting syntax from "machine-readable" into "machine understandable." The next iteration from "machine understandable" to "human understandable" is less apparent.

The crosswalks presented here have been developed during the first phase of this research-the determination of a terminological ontology. They contain mappings to MARC of eight metadata standards--CIMI, Dublin Core, EAD, FGDC, GILS, ONIX, TEI, and VRA.
